A brief history of Sandton
There is evidence that Sandton was first occupied by the Sotho and Tswana people and an iron age smelter was discovered in Lonehill. The first voortrekkers to settle in Sandton were the Esterhuysen family on the farm Zandfontein. Driefontein and Rietfontein are the other two farms on which Sandton exists today. Sandton was established as its own seperate municipality in 1969. It was a residential area featuring equestrian elites. In 1963 Nelson Mandela and other black freedom fighters were captured at Lilliesleaf Farm in Rivonia Sandton. Rivonia was originally called Edenberg but the name was changed to make it distinct from Edenberg in the Free State. Sandton City was opened in 1973 and it marked the beginning of rapid commercialisation and industrialisation. In 2000, Sandton, along with former towns of Roodeport and Randburg was included in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Urban decay in downtown Johannesburg caused many businesses to move to Sandton. Sandton now features the JSE, Nedbank headquarters, many five star hotels and the flagship station of the Gautrain.
