A brief history of Randburg

One can still find evidence of iron age activity on the local koppies - things like pottery and tools. The first people living in the Randburg are therfore believed to be indiginous tribes.

The first recorded history of Randburg was that of the voortrekker boers who established four farms: Klipfontein, Driefontein, Olievhoutspoort and Boskop.

During the gold rush Carlton Road, Church Street and Pritchard Street were established in open veld. There was a lot of game in the area and it was popular with hunters, hence the naming of Hunters Hill.

During the early 1930s there was a serious drought which forced many platteland farmers to move to the more urban Randburg area. Randburg was established as its own town in 1959 after a drive by the District Secretary of the National Party who considered Johannesburg to be too left wing. He wanted Randburg to have a more Afrikaans character. The name Randburg was chosen in a competition and derived from the new currency, the Rand.

Randburg was incorporated into the City of Johannesburg in the late 1990s.
