Getting started

There comes a time in everyone’s life where we face the fact that we have to move. Whether its something exciting like relocating because of a new job opportunity or simply finding a new home that suits your lifestyle, moving can be a very stressful time. As someone who has a lot of experience in moving, I can tell you that the secret to an easy and stress-free move, is planning ahead!

The first thing you need to do is assess the contents of your house/apartment, and believe me we all have more stuff than we think. The larger items are surprisingly easier to list and also can pretty much stay where they are until the day of your move. It’s the smaller items that we don’t fully take into account that surprises you when you start packing. Once you start packing all the items in your cupboards and in every other little corner, that’s when you realize that 10 or 20 boxes just wont cut it.

So start off with collecting/buying more boxes than you think you might need and start packing at least a month before the actual move. Start with packing things that you don’t use everyday, or every week even. Pack a couple of boxes a day, this way you wont be overwhelmed (and go into panic mode) with too much stuff to pack 3 days before your move.

A good tip is to label or number your boxes as you finish packing them, keep a list of what’s inside each box. Then check your boxes as they arrive at your new place against your list.

Which brings me to my next point; how to choose a moving company. This is also something that you do NOT want to postpone. You do not want to be all packed and ready to go with no one to actually do the move. Try and book you move at least 2 or 3 weeks in advance.

Finding a moving company

A quick google search will give you at least 10 companies to choose from. But his is where it gets tricky!

You will want to make sure that the people who are going to be moving your valuable possessions are trustworthy and reliable. The best thing to do in this case is to go to their website or Facebook page and read the reviews from actual people that have used their services. Most trustworthy companies have google reviews on the first search page if you google the company. This will give you a pretty good idea of where you can place your trust.

The next step is to contact them. Then wait and see how or when they respond. In some cases I have waited up to a week or so for some of the moving companies to come back to me. This does not inspire any confidence.

You are looking for a quick and friendly response, not someone who will add to the stress of moving by making you wait. If they have provided fast, efficient service up front, it’s likely that they will be the same on move day.

Finally and very IMPORTANT, find out what their policies are for items that are damaged or broken during the move. Many companies will not repair or replace items leaving you to pick up the pieces.

So plan well in advance and get started early. Find a trustworthy moving company with a proven track record, good service upfront, and who provide insurance for your household goods. Check out this article on preparing for your move for more information. Happy moving!
