When moving, people usually underestimate how long it will take them to pack up their home. The result, often, is frantically throwing things into boxes in a rush before the movers arrive on move day as stress and anxiety levels skyrocket. The more time you give yourself to pack, the better organised you’ll be and the less anxiety there will be on move day.
Below is a guideline of how many days we suggest that you allocate to packing up your home for your move, based on the size of your home.
- studio/1 bedroom - 1-2 days
- 2 bedroom - 2-4 days
- 3 bedroom - 3-5 days
- 4 bedroom - 4-6 days
- 5+ bedroom - 5-10 days
These estimates will vary depending on your unique circumstances. If you have a lot of stuff to pack up and you’re inexperienced at packing, the process can take longer.
Pro tip: Read this article about how many boxes you will need for your move.
Using your estimate of the number of boxes you will need to pack, you can get a rough idea of how long it will take you to pack your boxes using the guideline below. Note that different size boxes should be used depending on what is going in them. Packing a box with kitchenware (think crockery, glassware, and small appliances) takes the longest time as each item needs to be wrapped in protective wrapping paper before going into the box.
Book box (small) ---> 4-10 boxes/hour
Linen box (large) ---> 4-10 boxes/hour
General box (medium) ---> 3-6 boxes/hour
Hanger box ---> 3-6 boxes/hour
Kitchen box ---> 1-3 boxes/hour
Again, these estimates will vary depending on your unique circumstances and packing prowess.
